Since 1945, the Baltic Opera has shaped the musical life of Pomerania, while also functioning as a specific spatial form, linked to the building and its capabilities. For decades, it was a venue for performances, a workplace for artists, and a place to meet the public, and at the same time, a structure that dictated the institution’s operational methods. The exhibition begins with this history, but its main focus is a moment of change. It contrasts the existing building with projects for its transformation and the concept for a new headquarters. This is a transitional situation, where the past is not closed off, and the future is not yet defined. The question concerns not only architectural form but also how the opera should continue to function and what role it should play in the city.
