Would you like to learn about the history of the Old Town?

The Old Town in Gdańsk is the northern part of the Śródmieście district, picturesquely situated on the Radunia Canal, built by the Teutonic Knights in the 14th century. This canal, a unique piece of hydraulic engineering, played a key role in Gdańsk's economic development, enabling the construction of the Great Mill, the largest production facility in medieval Europe. The Old Town also boasts numerous valuable historical monuments, such as the Old Town Hall, St. Catherine's Church, St. Joseph's Church, and the House of the Abbots of Pelplin.

Today, even though each of these monuments now serves different functions, the area around the Radunia Canal is still vibrant, being home to many cultural institutions in the city. During a walk with a guide, we will uncover the secrets of the Old Town and its inhabitants, as well as learn about the history of the Radunia Canal. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the permanent exhibition of the University of Gdańsk Museum and the sacristy of the Oliwa Cloister of Pelplin Abbots, which is not usually open to the public. The walk will conclude at the Oblaci Tea House, located in a medieval monastic cellar, which will be the perfect end to the journey.

Sabina Rogalska - Antosik - a graduate of Gdańsk University's Gedanistics programme, a PTTK guide for the Tricity area, a guide for the European Solidarity Centre, the Museum of the Second World War, and the branches of the Gdańsk History Museum.

The event is being organised as part of the Culture Union RAD – a partnership network of cooperation between the Museum of the City of Gdańsk: the Amber Museum and the Gdańsk Science Museum, the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre, the University of Gdańsk Museum, the Oblate Centre for Education and Culture, and the "Panienki z okienka" Kindergarten.
