Atsumi Fukuda – was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1989. She first encountered music and the bassoon during extracurricular activities at Matsudo Municipale Wanagaya Junior High School, where she acquired basic bassoon skills and participated in wind ensemble classes. She continued her musical education in high school, and although it was a general education school, and music classes were extracurricular, playing the instrument became increasingly important to her. After graduating with a degree in Japanese Literature from Ochanomizu University, she finally decided to change her field of study and begin musical education.
In 2016, she moved to France to the Conservatoire de Lille where she began studying the bassoon under Professor Jean-Louis Ollé. Her excellent results enabled her to eventually transfer to the Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse de Lyon, where she studied the bassoon under the renowned Professor Carlo Colombo and his assistant Olivier Massot. Furthermore, she also studied the contrabassoon under Nicolas Cardoze and the baroque bassoon with Laurent Le Chenadec. She began her professional career in 2021 as Principal Bassoonist in the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra in Hungary, after which, in 2023, she passed an audition and began working as Principal Bassoonist in the Polish Baltic Philharmonic, named after Fryderyk Chopin, in Gdańsk, where she works to this day.
Simultaneously as a soloist and chamber musician, she takes part in many projects with other orchestras. She is also a member of the “Kappauso duo”, a duo that she founded with Tatsushi Fujioka, a fellow student and currently the principal trumpet of the Polish Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.
